Today is the end of Term 3 and I like to think I’ve got the hang of this whole ‘I have a 6 year old at school’ thing. I still can’t believe I’m here, but I’m pretty sure I got this.
I just re-read my learnings from Term 1 (here) and there’s one stand out that hasn’t changed.
1. The Tiredness
If I thought Ava was tired at the end of Term 1, well Term 2 totally blew that out of the water! Such a long stint as compared with Term 1, and by the time we got to school hols, she was well and truly wrecked, (as was I!).
It’s the most tired I’ve ever seen her, and with that came grumpiness, and a whole load of talking back and general frustration. Every morning, she’d open one eye and say “School?”, with a look of total disdain on her face.
This term has been a little easier, but she’s still tired after school. We get to Friday, and the only thing getting her through the day is knowing that in one more sleep, it’s the weekend! That goes for me too, Saturdays are such a welcome relief. And lucky for me, Ava’s pretty good at sleeping in, and sometimes doesn’t wake until well after 8am.
2. Not feeling the cold
So what is it with the whole ‘I’m not cold and I don’t want to wear my coat’ thing? I know it’s not just Ava, her friends are the same. Here’s all of us parents rugged up in coats, scarves, gloves and beanies during drop off and pick up. And the kids are happy to run around in next to nothing.
What gives? How do they not feel the cold? Or do we just feel it more cos we’re getting old(er)? And the boys are so much worse than the girls, getting around in shorts in the middle of winter. Argh, it makes me cold just looking at them! At least I can get tights on Ava to keep her little legs warm.
3. Lunch orders
Back in my day (geez, that makes me sound old, ha!) we didn’t have lunch orders in primary school. It was only when I got to secondary school, that we had a tuckshop and I got to have a sausage roll and a caramel chew on a Friday.
At Ava’s school, the kids get lunch orders from the local milk bar on a Friday, and Ava has dumplings and a chocolate milk. Dumplings? Talk about lucky. For me, I thought it was good when I opened my lunch box to find a sandwich with cream cheese and gherkin spread!!!
And then there’s the Classroom Cuisine app, where you can order sushi, which is delivered to their classrooms. Boy, how times have changed.
3. The toys
If there’s one thing that’s doing my head in lately, is the obsession with taking toys to school. Beanie boos, figurines, Zelfs, My Little Pony kinder surprise toys, all of those freakin’ annoying ‘small’ things.
I’ve tried to ban toys from getting into her school bag, but she’s a Wile E. Coyote and they keep appearing. And inevitably, there’s always something that gets lost, usually something that can’t be replaced. Insert ‘freakin annoyed that she won’t listen’ emoji here.
4. The lack of photos
In Term 1 I had my camera out capturing lovely little moments of Ava and her buddies hand in hand walking through school, and her swinging on the monkey bars etc. Fast forward and I’m pretty sure I don’t have a single photo of her from the last two terms (hence the photos in the post are from the start of the year).
Secretly I think she’s probably happy about that, as these days she’s not nearly as willing to get in front of the camera.
So that’s what I learned in Terms 2 and 3, do you have a Preppie too? Have you learned anything new, or have any ace tips you wanna share? I’d love to hear from you.
