1. The sound of Ava laughing
It’s the proper belly laughs that get me. When she laughs so hard she can’t breathe properly. It’s the BEST!
It may sound like a cliche, but it’s very true. Shopping suits me and I’m very good at it. If it was a subject at school, I would have totally aced it!
3. Great coffee
This may come as a surprise, but I only started drinking coffee in my 30s. I came back from living in London and went head first into a full on, stressful job. That’s when it all started, and I got in on the mid morning ‘coffee run’ with my new colleagues.
Fast forward and finding really good coffee has become a bit of a hobby. If I start my day with a great coffee, the sky’s the limit.
4. Image making
I’ve been an image maker for as long as I can remember. It all started when my Nan gave me her Box Brownie when I was eight. Soon after that, I was given a Kodak Instamatic, which got a serious workout, especially at school camps.
After that, I spent years shooting film on my trusty old Pentax K1000. About 8 years ago, I reluctantly moved on to a digital SLR, and sadly have not shot film since. Now I’ve downsized to a Canon Powershot, which is ALWAYS on me.
Painting, drawing, screen printing, making patterns, doodling, fabric dyeing, crafting, creative workshops – I just dig it! And I’m so glad that Ava does too. She’s a natural and we sit for hours, getting our creative on.
6. REALLY good TV
Once Ava’s in bed, the best kind of me time, is watching a REALLY great TV show. Some of my top faves over the last few years – Luther, The Fall, The Killing and Breaking Bad.
7. Portuguese Tarts
I know it’s all about donuts right now, but give me a Portuguese tart over a donut any day. Hands. Down.
8. Love Notes
Every week, Ava creates what I call ‘love notes’ for me. They say the most simple things like ‘I love you Mum’ and they truly make my heart sing. (If there was an emoji for ‘all the feels’, I’d insert it here!). Sometimes she hides them and I find them on my bed or around the house. And she’s forever saying, ‘Don’t look Mum’, when she’s creating a new one.
9. Talking to Mum
Every week, I have to talk to Mum on the phone. I usually call her when I’m driving home from work, and we chat about our weekends and make a plan to catch up.
10. Cafe hangs with my girl
Ava and I spend a lot of time hanging out in cafes around Melbourne. I’ve always loved it, and Ava is a well trained cafe enthusiast. It’s not just about the food and drink, it’s the experience, and the people watching. We both love it! We take colouring books and play Uno and generally, just have a nice time. I’m very lucky that she’s that kid, who can sit and spend hours just hanging with me.
See I told you, it’s the simple things. Nothing super flashy for me.
What makes you happy? Is it a really good coffee? Is it spending quality time with your family? I’d love to hear from you.
