I haven’t done a tunes post for ages, so here are some really cool Aussie bands on my radar.
I can’t get enough of Gang of Youths, their debut album ‘The Positions’ is simply awesome. Every song is a winner and I must have played it every day for the last couple of weeks. Here’s my fave song ‘Poison Drum’.
They are super talented and I’m bummed I won’t be able to get to their gigs next week, I just can’t make it work. They’re playing at Splendour in the Grass, so I’m thinking maybe I might try to get there. Not sure I wanna do a festival again, but the line-up is pretty impressive.
I heard The Cure will be headlining. They would have to be one of my all time faves and I spent many a day locked in my room, as a typical (not really) tortured teen, listening to their albums. I saw them play when I was about 19 and it was the most incredible gig. They completely blew me away. Not sure what their live shows are like now, and to be honest, I’m a bit wary of these old school bands who still tour.
The DMA’s album ‘Hill’s End’ is another current fave. I was surprised that they’re from Australia as they sound very British to me, a bit like old school Oasis. I read somewhere, that in typical Noel Gallagher fashion, he slammed them for sounding too much like them, and said he’d ‘boo’ them if he ever saw them play, ha! Anyway, their songs are what I call, ‘easy tunes that you can listen to when your Mum’s around’. ‘Too Soon’ is a good one to get you moving.
DZ Deathrays are super fun, a bit loud, a bit punk, a bit heavy, and prob not ideal to play when Mum’s around. Their new song ‘Blood On My Leather’ is great, and the video features local comedian Arj Barker as Satan! Looks like the director may be a fan of Dave Grohl’s role in Tenacious D (if you haven’t seen it, google it, it’s totally worth a look!).
So that’s it from me, what’s your fave album right now?
Stay tuned folks
