Last Friday, we met my friend Annette and her daughter Charlotte for lunch. Annette and I met at work over 10 years ago, when she took over my job before I moved to London in 2004. We reconnected again about 5 years ago, after realising we were both living north side and each had a little girl.
We’re both lucky enough to have Fridays off work, so we catch up with our girls every few weeks for a play date. Last week we met at Little Deer Tracks cafe in Coburg.
What a great spot to catch up. The staff were super attentive and really nice with the girls, even picking up their textas when they rolled onto the floor. It’s a good space where it doesn’t matter if the kids make noise, which is par for the course with two five-year-old giggle monsters like ours.
The menu covers both breakfast and lunch with some more interesting options than the usual staples. I had the huevos rancheros, a Mexican breakfast feast with beans, salsa, sour cream, avocado and jalapenos, all piled into a corn tortilla and topped with fried eggs. It was super tasty and a very generous helping too. Annette had the cauliflower fritters with a quinoa salad which was also really yum.
The girls each had a simple poached egg and avocado on toast combo, which went down a treat. The coffee was pretty good (and I’m fussy!) and there were plenty of amazing sweet treats for afters. I’ll be back just so I can try the baked cheesecake with salted caramel topping.
PS – I should mention that the food is vegetarian/vegan. It may not suit everyone, but I’m quite happy for a break from the bacon and more meaty fare at other cafes.
Oh and the black pattern image below is the awesome wallpaper beneath the front counter. I couldn’t resist snapping a shot, so cool!
