I took Ava to see the new Cinderella movie yesterday and it was truly beautiful. It’s one of the few fairy tales that doesn’t have a proper sinister undertone (think Sleeping Beauty) and has been a favourite bedtime story in our house for quite some time.
The story is so well known and the new adaptation, although a little different in some parts, is simply gorgeous. The overarching messages of ‘having courage’ and ‘being kind’ are so important to little and big girls everywhere. And the romance is not just between boy and girl, it flows throughout the film with the friendships and connections Cinderella has with her animal friends and the hired help. I’ve never seen myself as a hopeless romantic but there’s something about this particular fairy tale that really connects with me – I have to admit that I found myself dabbing away little tears at some of the more magical moments.
Not only is it a lovely story but this production is magnificent. Director Kenneth Branagh has created an incredibly beautiful and touching film which is a feast for your eyes. I’m such a visual person (and Ava is heading that way too) so it was important to me that we saw it on the big screen. The sets and costumes are just amazing but I’m running out of adjectives now!
In short, Ava and I loved this film and we would recommend taking your daughters, granddaughters, nieces, mums – and hopelessly romantic friends too!
