Thanks to advances in technology and the introduction of smart phones, kids these days are very used to having their photo taken. Most kids I know also like to take sneaky ‘selfies’ with their parents’ phones. I’m sure you’ve all found some stupid faces and lots of cut-off heads in your camera roll before.
Even though Ava is only 4 (I can hear her saying ‘… 4 and a half Mum!’), she loves it when she spots good graffiti and murals in our neighbourhood. I don’t mean scrappy graffiti, I mean proper commissioned art that is quite often amazing. We try to stop and take a shot when we find cool new pieces and these shots make great presents when framed.
Here are a few of our picks of great backdrops in and around Melbourne.
Melbourne – Hosier Lane
This is one of Melbourne’s most well known spots for striking urban art. You’ll see Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc and lots of other bright and crazy characters. It’s just across the way from Fed Square, so you could pop into the NGV too.
Melbourne – Centre Place
Another well known spot just off Flinders Lane full of colourful pieces. If you like crepes, visit Aix Cafe Creperie, you will not be disappointed!
Brunswick – Barkly Square, Sydney Road
Ghostpatrol & Bonsai Mural
Located on the outer wall of the Barkly Square shopping centre, this is my fave. I have been following Ghostpatrol for many years now and have several of his pieces and books at home. He is an incredibly talented artist and this collaboration with Bonsai is amazing (and huge!). I’m yet to take Ava to see it but I know she will love it, especially the birds.
Fitzroy – Gore Street
Lucas Grogan Mural
The house on the corner of Gore and Moor Streets is covered in the signature blue and white patterns that have made Lucas Grogan famous. I love his work and to stumble upon a house adorned with his work while driving through the back streets of Fitzroy is such a treat! I’m planning on taking Ava back there for a fun shoot.
As well as other locations in Brunswick and Fitzroy there are lots of great spots for photo opportunities in Collingwood, Northcote and Thornbury.
Keep your eyes peeled and happy snapping peeps x
