You have probably figured out by now that I am very passionate about photography. I studied it at high school and briefly as part of my graphic design course at university.
I shot film for almost 20 years and it wasn’t that long ago that I put my trusty old Pentax K1000 to bed. I finally took the plunge and moved to a digital SLR, but over time it seemed like I had lost the art of being able to take a decent photo. I just got lazy and let the auto settings do it all for me.
Then the iPhone came along and I got even lazier and just started using my phone to take shots. Apps like Hipstamatic, Instagram and VSCOcam enable you to do so many cool things, my poor camera was left for dead!
Now that photography had become part of everyday life (spending a lot of time creating shots for the blog), I decided that I needed to re-learn and build upon the skills I had learnt all those years ago.
I had been wanting to do a workshop with Megan Morton’s The School for ages but most of the courses are run out of Sydney. Every now and then they run workshops in Melbourne so I went along to Photography 101 with Brooke Holm at The Establishment Studios in Prahran.
What an awesome day it was. I met Brooke and stylist Marsha Golemac and they were so helpful (and super lovely to boot!). Brooke took us through the basics of how to use your SLR and shared with us her golden rules and tips on lighting, composition, post production and workflow. Marsha gave me some simple tips on styling that were absolutely invaluable.
It all came flooding back to me and within a short space of time, I was shooting better than I had in years. The Establishment Studios was the perfect location for the class as we had access to the most brilliant array of props I have ever seen.
Here are some of my fave shots from the day. Most of the props are mine as I thought it would be nice to personalise the experience with some old (and new) memories. Oh and of course be able to use the shots on the blog!
Happy Thursday peeps x
