These days Mexican is the new Spanish with tacos taking over from tapas. The taco trucks are doing a roaring trade and us Melburnians can’t seem to get enough of the simple street-style fare.
Until recently, I have found it a challenge to find really good value Mexican, let alone in a kid-friendly setting. So I was stoked to find Cornutopia at my local market and what a find it was!
Similar to the Taco Trucks, they operate out of an old silver van, which is parked at the Preston Market. There are tables and chairs out front and on sunny days, it is the perfect spot to bask in the sun and dig in.
The girls who run it are super friendly, love a good chat and always talk to Ava (so nice!). For me, good service can be sketchy in Melbourne, so when you find lovely people who remember you, it just makes you want to go back again.
So to the food itself, well the choices are bountiful. You can choose from tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos and even huevos rancheros for a good Mexi-brekky if you like. Their ‘bowls’ are a simplified salad-style version of the taco/quesadilla/burrito options (without the tortilla component). They have simple side dishes of corn kernels, which are perfect for (fussy) kids and all the usual accompaniments like guacamole, salsa, sour cream and tortilla chips.
The food is always super fresh, cooked to order and delicious. Don’t forget to try their homemade sauces (hot chipotle and zesty parsley), which really add a zing to your dish!
