From day one I have been playing my kind of music to Ava. Even before she was born (while I was pregnant) I took her to gigs like Franz Ferdinand and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
Early on I started introducing my love of all things rock & roll and soon enough Ava started her own version of ‘head-banging’ in the back of the car. She would ask who was playing and I would teach her about my favourite bands and tell her the names of the guys and girls and what instruments they played.
Lesson 1 was the Foo Fighters and if you ask her who the singer is, she will proudly say ‘Dave Grohl’. Lesson 2 was the Arctic Monkeys and one day she asked me to show her what they looked like. When I showed her a YouTube clip of them playing live, she seemed a little disappointed. I’m sure she thought they were ACTUALLY monkeys! (I love it that kids this age take everything so literally). Now, if asked, she can also tell you that the singer’s name is Alex, shortly followed by ‘like Alex from Madagascar!’, ha!
‘I can’t hear it Mum’, ‘turn it up’ and ‘rock & roll man!’ are the norm in our car. Next I think I might try some old school 80s stuff like Michael Jackson and Madonna and see what she makes of pop! If she loves Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ she’s gotta love old school ‘80s.
